• That The Alcove was the first public building in Mount Vernon to be air conditioned?
  In 1937 a 175 foot well was driven at the northwest corner of the building to provide the water to cool The Alcove.

• The Alcove Restaurant opened in 1911 as "Candyland" a candy shop selling homemade ice creams and sweets.  Candyland was the first ice cream shop in the area to be open year round.
  
  
• The Alcove opened as Candyland on December 6th, 1911 but disaster struck almost at once.  A fire broke out in the building next door on December 15th causing extensive smoke and water damage to the newly opened store, forcing them  to close for a short time.
  
  
• When The Alcove first opened its doors as Candyland in 1911 the owners paid $60 a month in rent and a cup of coffee was a nickel!
