Originating as an ice cream and candy shop on South Main Street, The Alcove grew from a modest beginning as "Candyland." Founders Fred Surlas and Peter J. Francis came to Mount Vernon in 1911 from Youngstown, Ohio to open a restaurant. A second-floor banquet room is named in honor of Fred Surlas. Sandwiches were added to the "Candyland" fountain menu in the 1920s. As the demand for quality food eventually outweighed the demand for candy and ice cream, the "Alcove Room" was added which offered an expanded menu including soups and sandwiches.

Expansion again took place in 1937 when the present building was constructed on the site of the original "Candyland." Because of the growing fame of the "Alcove Room," the newly planned restaurant adopted the name that still is held today; The Alcove Restaurant.

Located in the heart of downtown Mount Vernon, Ohio, the Alcove plays host to thousands of patrons every year. The Alcove Dining Room has been host to numerous celebrities: Alan Alda; Joanne Woodward; Paul Newman; Paul Lynde; Jonathan Winters; Governors Celeste, Rhodes, Gilligan, O'Neill; and Senator and astronaut John Glenn.

From our charming "lounge" to our spacious dining room and banquet facilities, we are sure to provide you with a comfortable and elegant dining experience.

  • That The Alcove was the first public building in Mount Vernon to be air conditioned?
In 1937 a 175 foot well was driven at the northwest corner of the building to provide the water to cool The Alcove.
  • The Alcove Restaurant opened in 1911 as "Candyland" a candy shop selling homemade ice creams and sweets.  Candyland was the first ice cream shop in the area to be open year round.
  • The Alcove opened as Candyland on December 6th, 1911 but disaster struck almost at once.  A fire broke out in the building next door on December 15th causing extensive smoke and water damage to the newly opened store, forcing them  to close for a short time.
  • When The Alcove first opened its doors as Candyland in 1911 the owners paid $60 a month in rent and a cup of coffee was a nickel!
  • The Alcove Restaurant has been hosting Dinner Theaters for over 25 years!
  • The Alcove has been host to numerous celebrities over the years.  Alan Alda, Paul Newman, and John Glenn just to name a few.  Join us for dinner tonight and let us treat you like a celebrity.
